What Is Anti-Static Flooring and Why Is It Critical?

Static electricity is generated whenever two materials come into contact and then separate — a process called triboelectric charging. When a person walks across an ordinary floor, charges can build up on their body and the floor surface to thousands of volts. In most everyday settings, this produces nothing more than an occasional mild shock. But in environments where flammable gases, vapors, or dusts are present, that same static spark can trigger a catastrophic explosion. In electronics facilities, static charges can silently destroy sensitive components without any visible spark at all.

Anti-static flooring is a floor coating system specifically engineered to prevent this static build-up by providing the floor surface with a controlled electrical resistance that allows charges to dissipate slowly and safely to ground — fast enough to prevent dangerous accumulation, but not so fast as to create a sudden current spike that could damage sensitive electronics. Anti-static floors typically have a surface resistance in the range of 1×10⁹ to 1×10¹² ohms — placing them in the upper end of the static-control spectrum, suitable for hazardous area (ATEX) applications and general static-control environments.

It is important to understand the distinction between anti-static flooring and ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) flooring. While the terms are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation, they represent different specifications. ESD flooring — specifically static-dissipative ESD flooring (10⁶–10⁹ Ω) — is the preferred specification for protecting sensitive microelectronic components. Anti-static flooring (10⁹–10¹² Ω) is the appropriate specification for preventing incendive sparks in hazardous areas and for moderate static control. Sri Sai Technologies will advise on the correct specification for your facility based on a thorough risk assessment, using CIPY flooring systems from Pidilite Industries throughout.

The Hazards of Uncontrolled Static Electricity

  • Explosive ignition: A static spark of as little as 0.2 mJ can ignite hydrogen–air mixtures; most hydrocarbon vapors require 0.25–1 mJ — well within the energy of a body discharge
  • Dust explosions: Grain dust, flour, coal dust, and sugar dust can be ignited by static sparks in silos, mills, and processing facilities
  • Sensitive component damage: ESD events invisible to humans can permanently damage or degrade microchips and PCBs
  • Process contamination: Static attraction of airborne particles causes contamination in cleanrooms, pharma, and food processing areas
  • Personnel discomfort and safety: Repeated static shocks reduce worker productivity and can be a safety distraction

Grounding & Earthing Guide for Anti-Static Flooring

01

Earth Resistance Verification

Before any anti-static flooring installation, the existing earth bonding system is tested to confirm earth resistance is below 10 Ω (and ideally below 1 Ω). Inadequate earthing is identified and corrected before floor application begins.

02

Copper Foil Earthing Grid Layout

A copper foil tape grid with typically 1.5–2 m spacing is laid onto the prepared, primed substrate. The grid pattern ensures no point of the floor surface is more than 1 m from a conductive path to earth. Multiple connections are made to the building's earth bonding system.

03

Conductive Primer Application

CIPY's conductive primer is applied over the copper foil grid, encapsulating the grid and providing electrical continuity between the foil and the anti-static body coat layers above.

04

Anti-Static Body Coat & Topcoat

CIPY anti-static epoxy or PU body coats and topcoat are applied to the specified thickness, creating the finished anti-static surface. The conductive additives within these layers interact with the earthing grid below to provide the required resistance specification.

05

Earth Bonding Point Installation

Permanent earth bonding studs or lugs are installed through the flooring system at strategic locations around the perimeter, allowing for future resistance testing and for bonding of equipment, containers, and other conductive items placed on the floor.

06

Commissioning Testing & Certification

Full resistance testing per IEC 61340-4-1 is performed at a grid of test points across the entire floor area. Earth continuity is measured at all bonding points. Results are documented and a commissioning certificate is issued — essential for ATEX compliance files and quality audits.

Frequently Asked Questions – Anti-Static Flooring

Anti-static flooring is a floor system engineered to prevent the build-up of static electricity. It incorporates permanent conductive additives in the coating layers and is connected to earth via a copper foil grid. As static charges accumulate on the floor surface or on people walking across it, they are dissipated through the conductive floor to ground — preventing dangerous static levels from being reached.

Anti-static flooring (10⁹–10¹² Ω) prevents static accumulation but dissipates charges more slowly than ESD static-dissipative flooring (10⁶–10⁹ Ω). ESD floors are specifically engineered and tested for protecting sensitive electronic components. Anti-static flooring is typically specified for hazardous areas (ATEX) and moderate static control. Sri Sai Technologies can advise on the correct specification for your application.

Yes. In ATEX Zone 0, 1, 2 (gas/vapor) and Zone 21, 22 (dust) classified areas, flooring must not generate incendive electrostatic sparks. Anti-static or conductive flooring with verified earthing is mandated by ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and equivalent Indian standards. Sri Sai Technologies provides CIPY anti-static flooring with full ATEX compliance documentation.

Yes — earthing is mandatory. Without connection to electrical earth, anti-static flooring cannot dissipate charges and offers no protection. Our installation includes a copper foil earthing grid connected to the building's earth bonding system, with full earth continuity testing at commissioning. We recommend annual verification of earth continuity in service.

Anti-static flooring is essential in: explosives and ammunition manufacturing, petroleum refining and storage, petrochemical processing, pharmaceutical solvent areas, grain silos and flour mills, paint production, electronics assembly, data centers, coal handling facilities, fireworks production, and any area with flammable vapors or combustible dust classified as a hazardous zone.

Surface resistance is measured per IEC 61340-4-1 (ASTM F150) using calibrated instruments with 5 kg probe electrodes at multiple points across the floor. Resistance to earth is also measured at all bonding points. Sri Sai Technologies provides a full test report with measurement locations and values, plus a commissioning certificate. Periodic repeat testing is recommended annually.

Yes. CIPY anti-static epoxy systems are available in food-safe formulations suitable for flour mills, grain processing, and food packaging areas where combustible dust creates ATEX Zone 21/22 hazards. The seamless surface is also easy to clean to food industry hygiene standards.

With correct installation and appropriate maintenance, CIPY anti-static epoxy flooring systems typically provide 8–12 years of service. The anti-static properties are permanent within the coating matrix and do not degrade with cleaning or use. Annual resistance testing ensures ongoing compliance, and any damage should be repaired promptly to maintain performance.
